Tamil Nadu is the pioneer and the land of origin of the super speciality of surgical oncology in India and has one of the largest groups of surgical oncologists within the Indian Association of Surgical Oncology (IASO) and Association of Surgeons of India (ASI) . TASO has more than 100 surgical oncologists from Tamil Nadu and Puducherry as its members and is a proud flag bearer of this.
TASO actively conducts conferences, seminars and workshops across Tamil Nadu to promote cancer care and surgical oncology in particular. It also organizes cancer awareness programmes to the general public to promote early detection and appropriate treatment of cancer. We welcome all surgical oncologists in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry to become a member of TASO and actively participate in its various educational and social activities
The logo of TASO was developed by Dr. Jagadish Singh Alluru, Surgical Oncologist from Chennai. The Thanjavur Brihadeswara Temple (also known as the Big Temple) in the background is an architectural wonder built in the tenth century by the Chola Emperor Raja Raja Chola I, represents the great state of Tamil Nadu. The three palm trees piercing the crab in the Logo represent the three aspects of surgical management of cancers: PREVENTION, SURGERY AND REHABILITATION. The crab represents cancer in patients and the palm tree is the state tree of Tamil Nadu.
The number 2008 in the bottom represents the year in which TASO was started. The two Kurinji flowers on each side represent the uniqueness of surgical oncology as a surgical speciality. The Kurinji is a purplish-blue flower that blooms only once in 12 years in the Nilgiri Mountains and has bloomed twice since TASO has been formed. The Outer circle represents the circle of life given to us by God the Creator and the inner circle is the circle of life provided to patients by physicians. It subtly reminds us and our patients that though we treat, it is God who heals.
The Visions of TASO are :
The mission of TASO is to promote scientific, ethical and quality cancer
care across Tamil Nadu and to encourage and advance the study and
practice of the science and art of surgical oncology.
