Surgical oncology is the branch of oncology that focuses on the surgical management of both benign and cancerous tumors. It forms a part of the multidisciplinary care of cancer patients along with medical oncology, radiation oncology, and other allied disciplines. Surgical Oncology emerged as an important specialty of surgical practice in India in the 1970s. The Department of Surgical Oncology as a separate oncological specialty was first started in Cancer Institute (WIA) Adyar, Tamil Nadu in India under the visionary leadership Dr. S. Krishnamurthi in the 1970s.
First CME programme in Oncology was held by Tata Memorial Hospital in 1975 attended by 200 surgeons from all over the country. Success of this programme led Dr B Ramamurthy, the then President of Association of Surgeons of India (ASI) to invite Dr Ashok Mehta to organize the first CME in Oncology at Ahmedabad Conference in December 1975. Dr Ashok Mehta wrote to the ASI for starting the Oncology Section of ASI after success of the CME. A resolution was passed and the Oncology Section was created at the Annual ASI Conference in Delhi in 1976. The Indian Association of Surgical Oncology (IASO) was started in 1977 as a separate organization and has been serving for the past 50 years in spreading knowledge & creating awareness for cancer and its treatments.
The first MCh programme in Surgical Oncology was started in Cancer Institute (WIA) Adyar, Tamil Nadu. Therefore, in a way, Tamil Nadu can be considered as the Mecca of Surgical Oncology in India. The MCh Programme in Surgical Oncology at Govt. Royapettah Hospital and Kilpauk Medical College under the leadership of Prof. R. Rajaraman was one of the first such courses in a government medical college in India. At present there are 10 medical colleges offering MCh Surgical Oncology and 5 hospitals offering DrNB Surgical Oncology in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.
In the year 2008, Prof. S Sadasivam, and other senior surgical oncologists in the state decided that an exclusive association of surgical oncology be formed in Tamil Nadu. This led to the birth of Tamil Nadu Association of Surgical Oncology (TASO). The association was then registered in 2013 as a non-profit organization under the Tamil Nadu Societies Registration Act to promote cancer care and the field of surgical oncology in India. TASO has now grown to more than 100 surgical oncologists as its members.
It's a great pleasure to welcome you all to the TASO website. Our mission is to create awareness about the speciality of Surgical Oncology among doctors and patients and promote early detection and appropriate care of cancer. Our mission is to initiate and promote scientific and research activities in various cancer institutes both Government and private, so that we conduct our own trials/research studies and produce world class evidence based cancer care in Tamil Nadu.
TASO was inaugurated in Coimbatore in 2008. The first academic activity of TASO was also in coimbatore in 2011 and it is my pleasure to launch the TASO website also in coimbatore in 2024.
